Description

Named after a gold dredge that once worked the Kawarau River, The Magnetic is a single block, single clone wine made from the Abel clone, planted on a tiny 0.34 hectare plot of the Cairnmuir Road vineyard in 2008. The Abel clone is said to be a cutting smuggled from a famed Burgundian estate and subsequently confiscated by one Malcolm Abel, a customs officer who, moonlighting as a winemaker, saw the clone's potential and propagated it.

Only made in exceptional vintages and sold direct through the Carrick cellar door and wine club. Wild fermented with 28 days on skins, pressed to seven French oak barrels for nine months. Certified organic.

Tasting Notes

Vintage: 2022

Colour: Deep ruby with a dense, concentrated hue and dark-edged rim.

Nose: Layers of red berry fruits, spice, mineral character and dried herb complexity. Violet candy and blackcurrant sit alongside black olive, earthy notes and subtle dusty oak. Complex, still very new and evolving.

Palate: Delicious and driven, with layers of fruit and wood spices framing flavours of savoury cherry and plum, dark fruits and black olive. Spicy, stemmy complexity and a lingering perfumed note create dynamic tension with grainy, structured tannins and underlying taut acidity. Needs time, but deeply rewarding to those who give it.
