There's a version of wine retail that's purely transactional. You want a bottle. We have a bottle. Here it is.
That's not why we built The Wine Traveller.
We built it because we believe wine, at its best, is something else entirely. It's a story. A place. A person who got up early every morning for years because they believed in what they were growing. And we think that story deserves to be told and heard every time you open a bottle.
Here's where that belief came from.
Wine, at its best, is a story. A place. A person who got up early every morning because they believed in what they were growing.
Why we started The Wine Traveller
Wine used to feel intimidating. Not because it's complicated, but because the way it was talked about made it feel that way. The scores, the jargon, the quiet implication that you needed to already know things before you were allowed to enjoy it.
We didn't think that was right. And we didn't think it was how wine was meant to be.
The best wine moments we'd ever had weren't in fancy restaurants with someone explaining the tannin structure. They were around a kitchen table, or at a vineyard we'd stumbled across on a road trip, or the first time someone poured us something and said, here, just try this, the person who made it has been farming this land for forty years.
That's the version of wine we wanted more of. So we went looking for it.
The Wine Traveller was built to find the producers who are farming honestly, making wine with as little intervention as possible, and telling a story worth sharing. Then to put that wine in front of people who are curious, but maybe don't know where to start.
Less junk. More wine. That's always been the idea.
What an experience actually means
We use the word experience deliberately, because we think it means something specific.
It starts with the winemaker. Every bottle we stock comes from a producer we've chosen because of who they are and how they work, not just because the wine scored well. When Greg curates the Journey Pack each month, the first question isn't 'is this a good wine?' It's 'is there a story here worth telling?'
Usually, the answer to both is the same.
The experience is in knowing that the Brockenchack wines are named after members of the Harch family, that Trevor and Marilyn have been farming their Eden Valley land since vines were first planted there in 1896, and that when you open a bottle of Tru-Su or Jack Harrison, you're drinking something that carries all of that with it.
It’s in knowing that Château Barbanau in Provence has been in the same family since Sophie Simonin-Cerciello’s great-grandfather planted the first vines in 1900, that Sophie stopped using pesticides in 1995 out of conviction rather than obligation, and that the estate has been certified biodynamic since 2018. The rosé she makes from Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown on limestone and clay, surrounded by cypress trees and wild herbs, tastes like somewhere specific. That’s the point.
The experience is the moment of connection between you and the wine, and between you and the person who made it.
That's what we're trying to create every time we pack a box.
The first question isn't 'is this a good wine?' It's 'is there a story here worth telling?' Usually, the answer to both is the same.
How the Journey Pack was designed around this idea
The Journey Pack isn't a random selection of good bottles. It's a curated set of six wines that work together, chosen around a theme, a producer, a region, or an idea that we think is worth exploring.
Some months it's a single producer. Some months it's a style, or a season, or a question we want to answer through the wines themselves. The brief Greg works to every month is: what would we want to open if we were sitting down together on a Friday night and wanted to discover something?
Each pack comes with tasting notes and the story behind every bottle, because we think context makes wine taste better. Knowing where something came from, who made it, and why, changes the way you experience it. That's not snobbery. It's just true.
The subscription model exists because discovery works better over time. One great bottle is a nice night. Six months of great bottles, each one a little different, each one teaching you something new about what you like, that's a journey. That's where the name comes from.
What our community says
We're still a young business, and we're building something we genuinely believe in. The feedback we get from Journey Pack subscribers is the thing that keeps us going.
People tell us they've discovered wines they never would have found on their own. That they've started paying attention to where wine comes from. That they've had conversations with their partners, or their friends, or their parents, sparked by something they opened from the pack.
That's the experience we're talking about.
What our subscribers say
"The organic reds taste incredibly fresh and clean - no chemical aftertaste at all and no hangover. We're hooked. Thanks, Greg!" - Kirk"We are normally Shiraz drinkers, but I would describe this Grenache as a warmer-climate Pinot Noir with more body, making it incredibly approachable, food-friendly, and a fantastic alternative to heavier reds." - Rob"We received our first wine traveller's red pack and were not disappointed. We loved the wine and it is excellent value. We highly recommend Wine Traveller for some exciting and different wine experiences." - Sue
